The Drogheda Homeless Aid Annual Christmas Sleepout which took place on Saturday night/ Sundaymorning outside St. Peter’s Church in West Street was a great success and, while donations are still coming in, the organisers are confident the amount raised will beat last year’s total of €48,000.
DHA Manager Maureen Ward told Drogheda Life this afternoon that they hadn’t yet got a total but she was fully expecting that they will top €50,000.
“It was really a great response” said Maureen who has been Manager of DHA for the last eight months and was doing the sleepout for the first time. “It went really well and we are hoping to raise over €50,000” she said.
Maureen thanked all the people who helped in any way both the volunteers who did the sleepout and the small army of collectors who were out in force throughout the weekend and often in foul weather conditions. She also thanked Mayor of Drogheda Paul Bell who had stayed with the sleepout until about 4.00 am.
“We were really overwhelmed and deeply touched by people’s generosity” Maureen said.
She told Drogheda Life that several local restaurants including the Bare Food Company, Stockwell Artisan Foods and Mizzoni Pizza had appeared at different stages during the bight with food and hot drinks for the “sleepers”.
“Completely out of the blue Casanova Restaurant sent over twenty hot meals, we were just blown away by everyone’s generosity” she said.
