The Sleepout, initiated for the first time in 1999, has become an annual event in December at St. Peter’s Church in West Street Drogheda.

Local politicians as well as representatives of local companies sign up every year to spend the icy chill of a December night on the steps of St Peter’s to raise much needed funds for Drogheda Homeless Aid.

This locally well-promoted event is a great way for Drogheda Homeless Aid to highlight the problem of homelessness in our community, and hopefully to raise the extra funds that we so badly need.

Paul Murphy chairperson of Drogheda Homeless Aid: "We know that many people have suffered in the recession and that money was short, and of course there are many other charities calling for support - but the community made the extra effort to fill our collection buckets."

Mayor Kevin Callan: "Thanks to one and all for your kindness and generosity throughout the collection. It can only make a person proud to live in a community where people help their local charitable organisations so much."

Richie Culhanel local councillor: "The number of users in the Homeless Aid are increasing each year and the more help we can give to those in need, the more we can demonstrate an example to prevent homelessness across the state."

Gerald Nash TD for Louth East Meath constituency: "It's important to show an example to the public, it's not only important to help the homeless but of equal importance to prevent homelessness,' he said. 'Resources are limited so we are looking for help from the public to give aid and raise public awareness."

John Rooney, MD of Flogas Ireland: “We are delighted to support such a worthy charity right on our doorstep, which provides much needed and vital services to our local community all year round.

Karen Smyth previous director of Drogheda Homeless Aid:  "We had such an amazing response from the people of Drogheda throughout the sleep out, and we would like to thank each and every person who made a donation, whether it was 50 cent or 50 euro it is so appreciated. We would also like to thank all of the shop keepers and local businesses who allowed our collectors to stand outside their premises to collect money, and we would like to thank the collectors themselves."
